Massage Marketing Bones
The Energy of Contact

Great marketing is just the healthy energy of touch you provide for your clients when they are not with you. Even for clients that you have not yet met!

If you use Selling Yourself Marketing, what type of energy are you putting out? It is kind of like a friend who always talks about themselves without listening to your concerns and joys. It is not the best.

Also, imagine a friend who contacts you, spends time with you, but you never contact them back. They are always the one putting out the contact energy. This may be happening if you don’t have a way of keeping in touch regularly with your clients.

Have you ever felt bad when a client who seemed to like their massage never called you back? It feels kind of personal doesn’t it? Guess what? When you talk to those clients, you will find out that most of them just forgot about their experience. Many of them honestly intended to call you again, but life kept getting in the way. What is happening? They are waiting for you to contact them. They are the kind of people who need support and friendship that goes two ways.

Do you feel pushy mailing your clients every month, or calling them? Well, if your sincere purpose is to help, listen, and support your client’s contact needs, instead of selling yourself, you will no longer feel pushy. You are a friend who keeps in contact.

You can also make sure your clients love hearing from you by making all of your contact a valuable service to them. They get something out of it. They may learn how to take better care of their health from your newsletter health tips. Or they may get a discount on their next service from a coupon, or a holiday gift certificate special. They might like seeing their name in the newsletter acknowledging them for referring clients to you. They may enjoy hearing about what new services you have to offer them. And if what you provide is valuable, they will pass on your messages to other people. It makes them look good, and they get to feel good helping others.

The important business reason for regular contact is because it is much easier and less expensive to get existing clients to come back than it is go get more new clients.

Best Contact

What are the best forms of contact?

A monthly newsletter is one of the best ways.

If you are concerned that you are not a good writer, don’t believe it. Absolutely anyone can write in a conversational tone. Most writing that people do when they are trying to look professional tends to be dry and boring to clients. Take my website for example. There are incomplete sentences everywhere. I write it like I am talking with you right now.

Make your newsletter a marketing tool, not just a purely educational piece. Educational material provides value to your clients. But also invite your clients to take advantage of your service and special offers. If you don’t ask them to contact you back in this way, it is like a friend who calls up, but never asks you to go out and do anything. Suggest they take part in a gift certificate special, or to schedule their next massage, or take part in your referral rewards program.

New client letters are also another excellent method of contact.

Birthday post cards are also great.

Phone calls are superb. Have you ever had your doctor call a couple of days after your appointment to see how you are doing? Shouldn’t that happen if they really care? You can make a fantastic impact by calling in person to see how your clients are doing.

Sending out reward letters for clients that they have referred to you is another great way to stay in contact.

Occasionally sending out a simple surprise gift can really touch someone. Maybe just a bag of aromatherapy bath salts that you made yourself.

You learned how to touch in a healing way with your hands, and it took a bit of study and experience and work. That is also true about learning how to touch your clients when they are not with you. You will be a more holistic practitioner though when you do. Think of good marketing as another touch modality you want to learn for your clients.

So just keep in mind, when you think about a client who has not been back recently, that may just be them wanting your contact.

Track it and Test it

You want to do a good job staying in contact, so you can see how important it is to keep careful records of your clients name, address, phone, and email. You are not a very good friend if you are not asking them how you can get a hold of them.

Also, keep record of important people or pets in their lives that they mentioned during their massage. Then review their file before their next appointment and ask about that person or pet. This might not feel genuine, but really you have a lot of friends. If you can keep all their important information in your head without notes, more power to you. I personally have terrible memory for names, but I still want to honor that fact that my client shared that information with me.

If they are a quiet client during massage, mention these things before or after.

Also keep track of who they refer. Also keep track of your marketing costs.

Completely Practical Tip
You Can Put Into Action Now!

It is easier to get people to come back than it is to get new people. Look through your client lists and select those people who have not been in to see you for two months or more.

Send them a post card that reads something like this:

I was thinking about you and realized I have not seen you in over two months! Is everything OK?

I have time to see you, and I am sure you could use a massage! Here is a coupon to help.

Then include whatever form of incentive discount you feel comfortable with. Have an expiration date.

On the bottom have a call to action:

Don’t put it off another day – call now and set your appointment. I am looking forward to hearing form you.

Put in your phone number right there. Then have your logo/name/address below smaller.

Now mail it out. Track the results. In a month test different headlines and words.

You could try a bolder funny headline like this:

Can you move? I sure couldn’t if I went over two months without my massage.

“It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
