Search Engines and Your
Massage Therapy Web Site

This page helps clear up some of the confusion about massage therapy web site traffic, search engine rankings and shows you how to get local clients with your site. I also show you how to see if this is worth your effort.

Ideally you want your massage therapy web site to bring you new clients all by itself and bring in more new income than it costs. Then it would be a smart marketing investment. And while your site may do a great job of supporting your other marketing, about the only way it can bring in new clients all by itself is through people finding you with a search engine.

Great massage therapy web site traffic depends on two things:

  1. Good search engine rankings for your web site pages for specific search terms.

  2. A decent number of people already searching for these terms in your area.

You can have the best search engine rankings in the world, and it will not do you any good without people out there typing in those search terms in your area.

How Do People Search?
A few people who have heard about you will search for your business name. But the vast majority of people will not be searching for you or your business. They will not be looking for you specifically. Instead they will be searching for generic search terms, often with your city or general location included in the search terms.

While some folks will tell you that there are tons of people looking for massage through search engines in your area, and that it is much better than the yellow pages, it might be true in your area, and it might not be. If it is true, you will focus on getting your site listed high in search engines. If it is not true, it may not be worth putting much effort towards.

Fortunately you can do some research and actually find out what people are searching for, and how many times specific search terms are used within a month, before you build your site. And based on your research you can decide how important it is to develop a site focused on pulling in lots of search engine traffic for your local area.

First, compile a big list of every possible search term you think people could make for your area. Normally people search based on location. So if you live in a city, your list will include things like, Tacoma Massage, Massage Therapy Tacoma, Massage Therapists Tacoma, Tacoma WA Massage, Tacoma Washington Massage Therapy, etc. These grouped words are called key words.

Now you need to use those terms to do some research. Go to Wordtracker and use their free trial feature. Then enter your search term. Write down the amount of people who have made that search in the past. Repeat this with all of your keywords.

I have been very surprised to find that in some places people are not searching for massage very much. Take Tacoma, Washington. It has a population of around 200,000. In one month there may be around 1250 searches for the term “Massage Tacoma”. While in Tucson, Arizona with a population around 850,000 there are very few to no searches. I think it mostly has to do with the individual state and how long they have had professional licensing.

If no one is searching for those terms, then you may consider not putting tons of energy into creating a massage therapy web site that is very search engine optimized. And also consider not putting as much money into it, because you know that your web site will provide mostly a supportive role, and will likely not bring in much new business by itself without additional cost in advertising.
