Best Marketing Tool?
A Massage Newsletter

Should I email my newsletter myself?
Generally speaking no. The reason is because you do not want your Internet Service Provider and all the other ISPs to think you are sending out spam email (which is likely because all the emails are identical). You also want a very professional looking email newsletter. Almost everyone who writes an email newsletter these days uses an online newsletter service. These services have relationships with the major ISP providers like AOL, they provide you with newsletter building tools and templates and they take care of all of the technical details of emailing your newsletter, all at amazingly low rates.
Constant Contact is probably the best known and most popular of these services. They have a great product. But I prefer iContact for the price, the service, and the fact that they are not blocked for spam by as many Internet Service Providers. Many people don't know it, but if your newsletter service provider is blocked your newsletters will not get through to your clients, and you will have no way of knowing that. Intellicontact is a better choice for this reason (and they don't advertise as heavily on the bottom of your newsletters as Constant Contact does.)
If you are also considering creating a website, another good newsletter solution is to use a Site Build It website. With your website hosting you get a complete email newsletter hosting system that works great. (It is what I use for my web site and newsletter.) They take care of your mailing list, provide a template for building your newsletter, and they take care of emailing it.
If I don't want to do an email based massage newsletter is it worth it to use a printed one?
Absolutely. Even with the higher costs and effort of a printed newsletter, it is still very profitable and powerful marketing if it is done right.
How often should I publish it?
At least once a month. I think twice a month is a little much and quarterly is not often enough. Once you decide on a publication and mailing date, keep consistent. It is unprofessional to have it come whenever you feel like it.
Isn't it kind of expensive and time consuming?
First let me tell you that just about every single marketer I have read tells their clients to start a newsletter. Everyone! It is a profitable tool, no doubt. You can spend far more on marketing to people who you don't know, and get less results. Or you can re-invest your client's money back into them, providing this great benefit. The key is to realize that it is a marketing tool, not just an expensive educational newsletter.
How big should my massage newsletter be?
Not too big and not too small. Originally I used to do large format 11x14 full color, front and back. That was a lot of content to come up with and publish every month. And after talking with our clients we realized, they don't want to read that much.
So then I moved to a standard 8.5x11, front and back, and I think that is perfect. If you print it on heavy stock you can send it folded without having to pay for an envelope for it. That is a money and time saver.
But you can also have a successful massage newsletter that is formatted to be an oversized postcard. It can still have some good marketing components at that size. And it would be easy to produce.
If you use an email based newsletter, keep in mind they are reading it on the computer. Make the font bigger, and try to keep the length from getting excessively long.
What about color and pictures?
Color is good, but not necessary. Color can add a level of professionalism that black and white can't. It you can, do color - if not don't fret about it. Pictures and color are easy with the email version, but make sure your images are correctly sized, or the newsletter will take a long time to download for your client. You want it to download very quickly.
Should I print it or have it printed?
Depending on how many regular clients you have you certainly can print it yourself. Particularly if you have less than 200 hundred clients this will save money. A laser printer will cost you far less per sheet than a color inkjet and will print much faster.
If you plan on regularly printing your own massage newsletter, an amazing solution is to purchase a color laser printer. In the last two years they have come down a lot in price. And you can save a ton printing things you have been paying your local shop to print. Check these guys out to learn more: www.color-laser-printer-reviews.com.
Even with a good color laser printer if you have to print out more than 500 it starts to may make sense to have it printed by a print shop. I don't recommend photo copies.
Should I mail it or use a mailing house?
When you start mailing out over 200, you will start to realize that it can be a lot of hours of work. Solution? Hire a high school student at low rates to fold, address, and stamp.
The next step is to start having your mailing sent by a mailing house. A mailing house will not only save you time, often the cost of their services can be offset because of the lower rate on postage that they can get you. Look for a close business, because you will most likely have to drop the newsletters off once a month. Sometimes your local printer will have a relationship with a mailing house and will deliver your printed newsletters for you.
No matter what use a massage newsletter!!!
Printed or emailed, it will be worth the effort of creating a monthly massage newsletter. But remember, there is marketing that is profitable, and marketing that is an expense. A massage newsletter is marketing. Make sure to include risk reversal offers, testimonials, referral systems, offers on products and services and education. And make sure it is very interesting. Read the section on this web site about using headlines. Use them in your massage newsletter for each section, to draw your readers into your copy. Have fun.
