Massage Marketing Tips for Male Therapists #6

Focus on styles of massage where men are more accepted. Ask the question, what types of massage are people more comfortable with a male therapist? I already mentioned chair massage. It is public, and people have their clothes on.

Sports massage is a great area for men. Men and women are OK with men giving them a massage if it is related to sports training and fitness. Because men are already more comfortable being touched by other men in a sports environment.

Men may be more accepted in specific medical massage situations. If you are recommended as a specialist by a doctor most people will get past their issues with a male therapist because their physical problems are bigger than their discomfort. You may work very closely with a physical therapist for this reason. Because once again, male physical therapists are more accepted. And if you are recommend by one, and work close by or in the same office, you will have less problems being a man.

Forget your are a man. You know, there is another perfectly good way to deal with this issue. Make sure that you are professional, and are reducing the basic risks. But after that, ignore it. Don't even think about it. Just provide great massage, do what you love, and things will naturally grow. Yes, they may grow a little slower than for a female therapist, but who cares? Life is full of time. What is the big rush? Just ignore it. This is good because if you don't make an issue of it, you won't attract people who have an issue with it.

Don't answer the phone with an assumption. Be more careful and attentive to how you talk on the phone, or how your receptionist or co-workers talk on the phone. Just a little change in the wording can make a big difference for you. Most folks are too concerned that a client may not want a man. So they say things like “Do you prefer a female or male therapist?”, or “Is a male therapist OK?” That is an implied assumption that there is a problem. So if the client has the slightest inclination for a woman, that is what they will choose. Instead, don't operate from the perspective that there is a problem. Treat a male therapist like a female therapist. Just book them. Say, “OK, I have you at 6pm with Robert.” Everyone knows that Robert is a male name. If the client sounds uncertain you can reinforce that Robert is an excellent therapist, maybe even suggesting that Robert is normally full and so they are lucky to get him. And if they still want to change to a female, then freely do so. But I guarantee that the booking rate for the male will increase greatly, without any significant issues from clients. And it will help people get over their male issues, and they will keep coming to see the male therapist.

And once you have started this, don't let your phone answering person fall back into making it a habit. The best thing is to write a phone script and stick to it. Have it stuck right next to the phone. Develop methods of positively directing your clients towards getting a great massage from the male therapist. And don't make any assumptions on the part of your clients. Don't assume they don't want a male. If you make it no big deal, they will feel like it is no big deal.
