Massage Marketing Tips for Male Therapists #3

Work on marketing your business one hour a day, every day. If you can make a commitment to doing this you will be in the top 1% off all therapists in terms of business practices, because nobody does this. This power of focusing your mind on your goals, and taking regular action, for just an hour a day, cannot be understated. Spend the first hour every week learning about marketing and planning what you will do the rest of the week. Then always do the thing that will make the biggest impact on your business first, no matter how hard it is, or how easy. Most people waste most of their time on things that are easy and that won't make a major impact. Take action. Work on your newsletter, make calls to your clients, update your website, attend business network functions.

Design your business to reduce or reverse the risks that people believe they may have receiving massage from a male therapist. What am I talking about? What are the risks? Well, imagine these two scenarios. One male therapist has a home office, in a residential area. Another male therapist has a public office in a business district with other health practitioners right next door. For a woman who is concerned about receiving massage from a male, which offers a lower risk?

Or let's say that men and women are concerned about being alone with a man. So you develop a chair massage business where you are never alone with your clients. You will have completely eliminated that risk.

Or you do both. You meet your clients in a chair massage environment, and slowly convert them to clients in your public office.

Don't give your clients any excuse to use you being a male as a reason not to see you. Think very carefully about what their concerns may be, and carefully eliminate or reduce the perceived issue.

Also reverse the risks through better marketing techniques. This is all about Client Problem Solving Marketing. Recognize the difficulties your potential and existing clients may have trying your services, and solve those problems for them before you even meet them. Preempt any reasons why they should not see you. Avoid any possible communication errors. Focus on them, their benefits, not yourself.

Use a picture. Often for women, it is uncomfortable coming to see a strange man they don't know. They naturally wonder if he is going to be a weirdo. Well, if you don't look like a weirdo, then you can reduce this risk by having a very professional picture of yourself in your advertising. They then have more to evaluate you on. You will not just be a stranger. You are a professional. They can imagine coming to see you. You could even go a step further and have a picture of yourself with 10 happy clients (men and women) around you in your office. You can use a professional picture in all of your marketing.

Use a website. Any concerns a potential client may have can be answered on your website. In every piece of marketing include your website. You could do that by saying something like “See my website for pictures of my office”. Then have pictures of your treatment room. And if you are located next to other professionals, have a picture of the outside showing that. This would really help a potential client get a clear picture in their mind of what their experience will be like. Also use your site to post as many detailed testimonials as you can, with pictures of the male and female clients would be best. Also post any other things that show you to be a successful and popular professional in this field. If you have been in practice for awhile, tell people. Post all of your licenses and awards.

Become a celebrity. People go from uncomfortable to excited if they think they are going to work with someone who is popular, famous, or hard to get an appointment with. If you like the idea, work towards those goals. Become a public speaking figure. Contribute to a newspaper column. Establish yourself as undeniably legitimate and successful and flaunt that in all of your marketing. You could even develop a practice that is exclusive. You will only accept clients from a referral. No exceptions. Then everyone who sees you will feel special. And referring to you will become a sign of status. Doing it will make the giver look good, and it will be a real gift. When you are a little slow, tactfully request in your newsletter that you are ready to see some new friends of your clients.

Reap the benefits of being a man. You can also approach this issue very directly if you like. Many people believe they need super “deep” tissue massage. And they may believe that a male therapist is more capable of providing this type of work because of the man's bigger musculature and weight. Now, these things may or not be true, but you can certainly use these beliefs to your advantage. Make your marketing statements about being a male therapist who provides that type of work. You will get people talking about you just because you are a man. That will be your primary advantage.

Are you a really big and intimidating guy? Maybe your focus will be on big people. You might truly have an advantage when it comes to really big men and women with big muscles and body fat to work through. You could be the Big & Tall massage therapist. Get a special table that does not creak and is extra long. Market that fact. Take pictures of yourself with 15 of your big clients. Use it as a niche advantage. Show them how comfortable they can be with you.
